5 Tips For A Scrap Metal Fundraiser

Posted on

If you need a low-cost, low-risk fundraiser idea for your organization, scrap metal recycling may be the perfect solution. There is no product to buy, so your out of pocket costs are only what you spend on marketing the fundraiser. You can also manage the time commitment by only hosting one delivery day, which means you only need to give up one Saturday for your cause. The following tips can help you host a successful recycling fundraiser.

Tip #1: Contact a Recycler

Every recycler handles different materials, but generally ferrous metals are the main type that is recycled. These are metals that a magnet will stick to, like soup cans or old washing machines. Some recyclers may also take some nonferrous metal, like aluminum cans. Just make sure you are clear on what is and isn't allowed.

Tip #2: Create a Flier

The flier should be simple and to the point. List your organization name and the reason you are having the fundraiser. Follow this up with the key details – what types of metal are allowed, if your organization can do pick-ups, and when and where the drop-off is occurring. Hang these fliers on community bulletin boards, hand them out to local businesses, or even print them as door hangers to hang in the neighborhood.

Tip #3: Manage Your Collection Point

A central collection point works best. Talk to local businesses to see if you can use their parking lot. Businesses with large lots may oblige, just remind them that the event may bring in extra customers. Otherwise, talk to a business that is closed on the weekend and won't be using their lot. As for collection method, some recyclers may even provide you with a roll-off dumpster to use when collecting the materials. If not, you will need to find someone willing to donate the use of a truck and trailer to handle the hauling. If you are also offering pick-up services, make sure that you have enough drivers with appropriate vehicles to make it to all the pick-up locations.

Tip #4: Contact the Media

A slow news day can make your fundraiser big news. Contact local media outlets and let them know what you are doing and why. Even a small mention on the evening news can bring in extra donations. Also, check your local news stations websites – many have a page available for listing community events and fundraisers.

Tip #5: Prepare Your Volunteers

When the big day arrives, make sure your volunteers are properly outfitted. Each needs a pair of heavy work gloves and a strong magnet. Make sure they know how to assess items to see if they are acceptable and that they have a list of unacceptable and acceptable items. Use cones or caution tape to set up a drive area so that cars are routed safely to and from the collection area. Contact a business, such as Harbour Metal Recycling Ltd, for more information.
